Population: A group of individuals of the same species living in the same geographical area.
The population with the main focus will be the harbor seal (Phoca Vitulina), shown in the above picture.
Adaptions- The first adaption that these seals have developed is a large layer of blubber, effectively keeping them warm. The second adaption is their ability to swim forward, sideways, and upside down, although they rarely ever swim backwards.
Biotic Potential- The maximum reproductive capacity of a species under optimal environmental conditions.
Male Harbor seals are ready to reproduce at anywhere between the ages of 3 to 7 years. Female harbor seals can reproduce at any time between 3 to 6 years old. Female harbor seals usually have around one pup every year. These seals also have the ability to have delayed implantation to make sure that the baby seals are born in the correct season where there are better conditions.
Intraspecific Competition- Is when multiple organisms of the same species compete for the same limited resources.
One example of intraspecific competition between harbor seals is the males fighting over mates. The females are the limited resource and the males must fight over who gets to pass on their genes. The males end up fighting underwater and the female will always mate with the stronger male.
I could not find a good picture of two harbor seals fighting.
